THE BOOK

Marv is a songwriter and lyricist. With that, his organic style of writing is to write in rhyme. Impressively, that is just what he has done in this book

He has written the entire book in rhyme!

The book starts off with Marv's own personal story, the section called "Memoirs of a One Hit Wonder."  You will read how, at 10 years old, he had a dream of becoming a rock star. He recruited other kids to join him in singing songs he had written which were usually “doo wop” love ballads so popular in the 1950’s when he was growing up.

See how he takes his journey in writing, performing, organizing quartets, and pitching his songs to record companies to the wonderful day, at age 17, when he would learn that a beautiful song he had written and performed with the Safaris called “Image of a Girl” hit the charts to be #6 in the nation!  The icing on the cake would be winning a Gold Record for “Image” in 1960.

In addition, within the second half of the book, Marv has shared "goodies about oldies" where he has compiled over 250 stories, personal accounts, and facts about songs and artists of the music industry from the 1950's to the early 60's.  For years, he carried these "tales" around with him from his own personal experience as a young Doo Wop "One Hit Wonder" to stories he acquired through being in the business and research he pulled together.

This book makes a great gift for lovers  of oldies music from the 1950's and early 60's!

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. It's filled with so many interesting stories about songs and artists of the music industry from the wonderful years of the 50's and 60's. It's very uniquely and cleverly written all in rhyme. An exceptionally fun read!

This book took me back to a more innocent time. For example, I loved that little Marv Rosenberg could drop in on actual record companies, tape in hand, to pitch the songs he had written. I also admired the tenacity and drive that took. Got such a kick out of hearing about the funny yet frustrating events that took place for so many of Marv's contemporaries: ie, Ricky Nelson's story of the time he played in such a dive that the one toilet in the place was directly behind the stage, and had a sign on it that read: "Don't Flush During Show!" I also loved all the pictures and photos throughout the book.

Rosenberg's honesty and sly humor make this a fun read. There are plenty of books about big celebrity musicians but not many about one-hit wonders. He's an unpretentious writer and has had run-ins with some HUGE stars. Puts you right there in his shoes.

"Goodies About Oldies:Memoirs of a One Hit Wonder" is a delightful musical journey. Marv Rosenberg, Ph.D. shares the details of his life with the Safaris and his loving perspective on the Doo Wop genre in a way that reads like a Doo Wop soundtrack. His perspective is warm and inviting and I am in love with the melodic rhyme-speak. It's evident that Rosenberg could write an epic about the music that has inspired him over the years. This book gives an honest and clear look at where Doo Wop came from. He opens his own life to others with playful honesty. This book is the next best thing then to have been there.

Charming, lyrical description of his life on the road, and the people in the early years of Rock 'N Roll.  So much fun to read, it makes you want to read it again!

This is a great book, chock full of interesting information on the men and women who created some of the greatest music of our time. If you (or someone you know) love Oldies music, this is the book for you! Marv Rosenberg's wealth of knowledge and his comedic presentation of this information are hard to beat!! Have fun!

My parents raised me on a lot of the music covered in this book. And while many of the popular songs from the time period were by huge names, the overwhelming majority were by smaller names whose stories are rarely told. How nice to read a behind-the-scenes account of a normal kid's journey through that experience. I think fans of the Tom Hanks-directed movie, "That Thing You Do!", would love it. Smart and charming. A wonderful read.
